June 10th, 2010 - Michigan Municipal League - Social Media Session

Social Media Is Here - Is Your Community Ready?

This session will explore what an employer should do to establish policy governing the use of social networking sites as it pertains to the reputation and integrity of the organization and to safeguard protected or confidential information. Employers have heightened interests in controlling the job-related speech made by an employee in their professional capacity and they can require that all employee communication on official business, no matter where it is, must be accurate, demonstrate sound judgment, and promote the employer's mission.

Upon completion of this course attendees will be able to:
1. State how using social networking internet sites by employers and employees can impact the liability of the employer.
2. Explain the legal implications of using social networking sites as part of their employment investigations into candidates for hire.
3. Establish policy, training, and audit procedures to protect against allegations of civil rights violations.
