May 20th, 2010 Farm Market GAAMP Training
Farm Market Generally Accepted Agriculture and Management Practices (GAAMP) Training:
Under the Right to Farm Act, the Commission on Agriculture can adopt what are called Generally Accepted Agriculture and Management Practices (GAAMPs). Local ordinances may be preempted if they extend or revise in any manner the provisions of this [right to farm] act or GAAMPs.
In January 2010 the Commission on Agriculture adopted a new GAAMP for farm markets. This new set of GAAMPs may affect the application of certain local ordinances to regulate several aspects of farm markets regardless if located at the farm or at an off-farm location.
MSU Extension, at the request of the Northwest Michigan Council of Governments, now has a training program on the new Farm Market GAAMP. This program will cover a review of GAAMPs generally, the Farm Market GAAMP definitions, its treatment of farm markets including physical characteristics, marketing, buildings and/or space, driveways, parking, signs, lighting, location, products that may be processed and marketed for sale, and how this may affect certain local zoning ordinances.
